Dance education

PMDI sets the standard for dance education | Star City Sports

The Pure Movement Dance Institute was established in 2001 by owner and director Rhea Gill to provide Lincoln dancers with an art-based dance program.

The Institute was founded on the belief that dance should be viewed and experienced as an artistic expression. A core part of the studio’s ethos is to provide a platform of support and education for every student, focusing on the art of dance, while exposing young people to the history, founding and to the advancement of dance culture. The Institute provides its students with the highest quality dance education available, while providing hands-on class hours and a family atmosphere. Highly trained staff teach students ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, lyrical and hip-hop.

Pure Movement is unique in being home to two student companies, “The Pure Movement Dance Company”, the studios original student company, and “Nebraska Contemporary Dance Theatre”, Nebraska’s only pre-professional contemporary dance company for young people. In addition to performance opportunities at the annual May recital, participation in either company provides students with the opportunity to participate in additional performance and learning opportunities. Each year, student companies perform in an annual winter ballet, community shows and festivals, in addition to traveling and attending masterclasses with professional companies from across the country and abroad.

Pure Movement recognizes that each dancer is unique and does its best to support each dancer as an individual. The particular attention paid to the students and their profession allows the teachers to accompany each student, from those who dance for pleasure to those who will make a professional career in dance.

The Institute is housed in a state-of-the-art 5,500 square foot facility and provides its students with nothing but the top of the line equipment. Each studio has wall mirrors, individual heating and cooling systems, ceiling fans and premium sound systems.

The most important element in each of the studio spaces is, of course, the professional sprung floors, which are designed to give flexibility to the legs. Above each of the suspended floors is a layer of professional Harlequin Marley dance floor, which provides more cushion to the leg as well as a non-slip surface. These are the only such floors at Lincoln and are the same floors used by Juilliard.
