Shanghai City Ballet was founded to provide high quality dance education to students of all ages. Since opening in 2013 with a single school class and a handful of students, it has now expanded to its current location on Changle Lu with three fully equipped classrooms including floating floors, a changing room , a waiting room, a reception and private toilets.
From 2 to 4 years old, the Shanghai City Ballet offers PreDance programs designed to allow students to learn dance in a fun way. The aim of the program is to improve listening skills, coordination, cooperation, musicality and to expose students to the structure of our class and our programs. They encourage their students to use their imaginations in a fun, safe and stimulating dance class that balances discipline, student exploration and self-expression.
With an emphasis on creating a positive learning environment that encourages the development of an ongoing love for dance, these classes can hold up to 10 dancers and are divided into two sections: My First Steps and HipHop. . My First Steps is a ballet-based program divided into three age groups: PreSteps (2 years and over); Stages 1 (3 years +); and Stages 2 (4 years +). These lessons are designed with a ballet base using a wide variety of music.
The HipHop is intended for dancers ages 3 to 5 and is designed similar to the My First Steps classes, but uses the HipHop dance style. PreSteps classes invite parents inside the classroom to participate alongside their child. Stages 1, 2 and HipHop are independent learning with parents who stay out of the classroom. All ages are determined as of December 31. Fees are paid quarterly with a rate of RMB 160 per class.
From the age of 5, the Shanghai City Ballet follows the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) program as part of its ballet lessons. RAD was established in 1920 and is one of the most influential dance education and training organizations in the world. With 13,000 members in 89 countries and offices in 36, RAD has an incredible global network of passionate and qualified employees, teachers and members, including the Director of SCB.
SCB uses the RAD program as a framework to develop its dancers during our 40 week school year. Each year, the famous RAD Classical Ballet Examination Program is taught to thousands of young people around the world, with approximately 250,000 students per year taking their exams, including many CBS students. RAD exams are recognized by Ofqual and contribute to UCAS points.
Using the RAD program, SCB can provide age-appropriate, safe and stimulating ballet lessons with a clear structure, progression and purpose. The use of a globally practiced and recognized program also allows the students who will move to continue their training in full transparency. To support their RAD ballet program, SCB also offers Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) courses. PBT is an innovative body conditioning and strengthening program. One of the important elements used in the PBT method is muscle memory which helps students better understand core stability, weight placement, and alignment.
All courses at SCB are taught in English by internationally trained instructors who have 10 or more years of teaching experience. This team is led by their studio director who holds a Masters in Dance Teaching as well as membership in many dance education organizations including the Royal Academy of Dance, the Imperial Society of Dance Teachers and the Progressing Ballet Technique.
