Dancing charm viewed at Beijing Intl. Dance Video Festival

The 1st Beijing International Dance Video Art Festival, which features dance film screenings, masterclasses and dance visualization seminars, is one of the signature events of the 12th Beijing International Film Festival. This year. It offers a variety of artistic activities during the 16-day event which kicked off on August 13.

The artistic season covers six sections, from city-themed video projection and dance to open master classes. The festival is the first in Beijing to solicit dance videos from around the world. More than 100 dance videos and films are screened during the event.

“We will screen 94 finalists out of 300 submitted dance works. We hope to expand the concept of dance theater through videos, live streaming and online channels. Dancers can express themselves in the theater and in front of the camera,” said Zhao Yuanhao, co-curator of the Beijing International Dance Video Festival.

Cao Shuci is the principal ballerina of the National Ballet of China. She starred in the film “Ballet in the Flames of War”, shown at the opening ceremony.

“Cutting edge, modern, dramatic and even conventional dance videos could bring more vitality to theatre, film, dancers and audiences, helping us to break down the boundaries of artistic creation,” she said. at CGTN.

More than 20 notable international dance videos will also be screened during the artistic season, including “Goodbye Cunningham”, “Francis Ha” and a 3D version “Pina” – a tribute to German choreographer Pina Bausch and her famous dance troupe.

A choreography marathon was also streamed live online. The dancers livestreamed the process of creation, practice and treats for 48 hours online to show how artistic ideas are created and produced.

Organizers say dance videos are a type of art that has a lot of room to grow in many countries. “This form of cross-border performance makes it possible to combine the art of dance with diverse scenarios, characters, props and new technologies,” said Gao Shan, artistic director of the festival.

Residents can also participate in various activities during the event, such as dance seminars, guided tours by famous artists and open master classes.
